My mother was born and raised in New Orleans and still has lots of extended family there. Since I was in town for the Running of the Bulls, my cousin Sidney decided to throw one of his famous pool parties on the following day.
I showed up with a few Austin rollergirl friends, and we were greeted with abundant food, drink, and live music in the backyard.

After Hurricane Katrina destroyed parts of New Orleans in 2007, many people evacuated to and eventually resettled in Houston. And luckily, they brought their culture with them.
A zydeco band is playing in the park today just across the street from the NAFSA Conference. I can almost taste the boiled crawfish… Just wish I could upload the picture.
Keeping friends and family updated on our adventures in the US is one of the functions of this blog. Suppose I should start actually doing that. I wrote this particular blog entry on January 16 and never got around to posting it.
One of the best things about having moved back to the US is that I now get to see extended family more often. By “more often”, I mean more than once in 10-20 years. Continue reading
